Apple has announced a product recall of a leading speaker product after determining that it poses a fire safety risk to customers.

Owners of Beats Pill XL speakers are advised to return the product and receive a refund after it was discovered that, in rare cases, the battery could overheat and pose a fire safety risk.

The recall does not affect any other Beats or Apple products.

The speaker, which was released in November 2013, can be identified by the Beats ‘b’ logo on the speaker grille, as well as the words ‘beats pill XL’ on its handle. It is sold in black, metallic sky, pink, titanium and white colours.

In a statement, an Apple spokesman said: ‘Because customer safety is the company’s top priority, Apple is asking customers to stop using their Beats Pill XL speakers.‘

Customers who purchased a Beats Pill XL speaker should visit the Apple site for details on how to return their product to Apple, and how to receive an Apple Store credit or electronic payment of £125.

Beats Electronics was co-founded by rap mogul Dr Dre and businessman Jimmy Iovine in 2008, before the company was sold to Apple in 2014.

‘Apple has received eight reports of incidents of the speakers overheating, including one with a burn to a consumer's finger and one with damage to a consumer's desk’, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission said in a statement.
