Apple Tree Yard author Louise Doughty has teased a sequel to her first novel, which may hint at what to expect from a possible second series of the BBC drama.
The author suggested that events could focus on Mark Costley (Ben Chaplin) after being sent to prison for manslaughter.
"There's a lot more exploration to be done," Doughty said at the London Book Fair (via The Sun).
"What happens to a fantasist when his fantasies are revealed to be dust? This is a man who has lived by this image of himself all his life, as a lothario and someone heroic."
The series follows Dr Yvonne Carmichael (Emily Watson), who begins an affair with Costley while unaware that he is a spy.
The series left us all on a cliffhanger when it was revealed that she had conspired to kill her rapist, and set up her lover to take the fall and go to prison.
"I reckon Costley emerges from prison a broken man, so how does he put himself back together?" Doughty explained of where the story could go.
"That would be the angle. What everyone would want to know is, does he get back with Yvonne?"
Meanwhile, star Mark Bonnar, who plays Carmichael's downtrodden husband on the four-part series, recently spoke to Digital Spy about how the show handled Yvonne's harrowing rape scene.
"I'm struggling to think of another [TV series] that has addressed rape as honestly as this before," he said. "Certainly from me watching it with my wife – it still hit me deep in the solar plexus.
"It's a very visceral experience as a viewer, and all power to it for that."
