Into the multiverse? Google claims huge quantum computing advance
STORY: Google says it has cracked a key challenge in quantum computing, with a new chip capable of almost unfathomable speeds. The tech giant says it can perform one standard test in under five minutes, one that would take one of today’s fastest supercomputers 10 septillion years. That’s vastly longer than the universe has existed. Google says the results lend credence to theories that quantum computing taps into a multiverse of parallel universes. Dubbed “Willow”, the new chip has 105 so-called “qubits” - the building blocks of quantum machines. They are super fast but also very error prone, and can be upset by something as tiny as a passing subatomic particle. Now Google says it’s found a way to make them more reliable, and says it can also correct errors in real time. That’s a big step towards building a practical quantum computer. Google hopes such devices could one day deliver huge advances in fields like AI and medicine. In a blog post Monday, it said that - even under ideal conditions - it would take a regular computer a billion years to get the same results as Willow. The processors are being crafted at a new purpose-built facility in Santa Barbara, California. Rival firms have focused on building chips with more qubits, but Google says improving reliability is the key to delivering a workable system.

Google announces quantum computing chip breakthrough
Google on Monday showed off a new quantum computing chip that it said was a major breakthrough that could bring practical quantum computing closer to reality. The breakthrough in error correction, published in leading science journal Nature, showed that adding more qubits to the system actually reduced errors rather than increasing them -- a fundamental requirement for building practical quantum computers.

The phone apps that will make your life easier – and why you should delete the rest
Every week in the UK, around 44 million apps are downloaded. Without them smartphones would just be phones. But according to a recent survey, a third of the apps on our phones are unused. They sit there in the background taking up memory space. Some act like digital spies, quietly collecting data about our habits that faceless companies can then sell on.

Why Apple may be due for a stronger-than-usual iPhone update cycle
Apple (AAPL) launches its iOS 18.2 update today. Some features in the update include ChatGPT integration into Siri and creating your own emojis. Creative Strategies CEO and Principal Analyst Ben Bajarin sits down with Asking for a Trend Anchor Josh Lipton to talk about how the new iOS update could impact iPhone demands and sales. "I think the super cycle term gets thrown around," says Bajarin. "I mean, I'm just still of the strong conviction that hardware changes, design changes drive those super cycles, not software. I do still think this is going to be a stronger-than-normal upgrade cycle only because we've known that this is an aging base." Bajarin went out to talk about the partnership between Apple and Sam Altman's OpenAI, the company that develops ChatGPT. "I think OpenAI, they're not Google. In no way, shape, or form are they brand-recognized or used as much as Google," says Bajarin. "So you could see the differences of this deal between a Google for search and ChatGPT and OpenAI for other features." Watch the video above to hear Bajarin's full take on Apple's iOS update.
