Apple billed its pricey new iPhone XS and XS Max handsets as its toughest ever – saying the two phones had the ‘most durable glass ever in a smartphone.’

But sadly, the new phones still shatter almost instantly when dropped onto a concrete pavement, according to tests by device insurer SquareTrade.

That’s going to be painful for owners – particularly as the top-end iPhone XS Max model costs up to £1,449 – and £326 for a screen repair.

In a drop test, both models saw broken glass after being dropped from six feet onto concrete – and a ‘tumble test’ saw hairline cracks, loose glass and scratches.

Both phones survived total immersion, though.

Both phones were placed in a 60 second tumble test, which caused hairline cracks, loose glass and scratches, according to SquareTrade.

Jason Siciliano, vice president global creative director at SquareTrade said, ‘We were super impressed with the iPhone XS Max, which is much stronger than its discontinued predecessor, the iPhone X.

‘However, as with the iPhone X, our tests show the all-glass design of the iPhone XS and XS Max make them highly susceptible to cracking, particularly from drops, the most common cause of damage.’
