Aquarium Penguins Take a 'Field Trip' to Chicago Stadium

Four Magellanic penguins from Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium took a field trip down to a neighboring sports stadium on October 20.

Footage released by the aquarium shows Izzy and Darwin, a bonded pair of penguins, along with their friends Tombo and Charlotte, inspecting locker rooms at Soldier Field and waddling through a tunnel to enter the arena.

The birds were exposed to new sounds, smells, and sensations at the stadium, which was set up for a soccer match. The excursion was part of a series of outings for the penguins after Izzy and Darwin had visited the Field Museum to explore and get some exercise in.

“Variety like this is important for the welfare of the birds, ensuring that just like in the wild, no two days are ever the same,” the Shedd Aquarium said. Credit: ©Shedd Aquarium/Sam Cejtin via Storyful
