Argentina promises crackdown on distracted train drivers caught dozing and sleeping behind controls

One conductor was spotted taking a doze, while another driver pulls out a book and has a read as his train speeds along.

A third conductor talks on a mobile phone at high speeds.

The distracted drivers were caught in the act after officials decided to put cameras in their cabins.

Argentina transport minister Florencio Randazzo said drivers must now pass physical tests to ensure they don't fall asleep at the wheel.

He said: 'We are adding to the alert control system a blood oxygen level study that is carried out at the moment, and is works to determine whether the person is predisposed to falling asleep.

'The results are instantaneous. We're also going to implement alerts for both medical and technical issues.

'The alerts have to do with alcohol and drugs.'
