The Oscar-winning actor was responding to getting dinged during the award ceremony as presenters Bella Ramsey and Anthony Ramos presented the category for Best Song.
Ramsey started off by reading the teleprompter, saying that the songs nominated in the category were “delivered by some of the most famous voices in the music industry.” Ramos then named Billie Eilish, Lenny Kravitz and Dua Lipa.
The joke that stung the Broadway star was when Ramsey read the joke that lumped DeBose with Jack Black and Ryan Gosling, calling them “actors who also think that they are singers.”
DeBose’s reaction to the joke was not favorable as she is not only an actress but a singer who won an Academy Award for her role as Anita in Steven Spielberg’s 2021 musical film adaptation of West Side Story.
Other Broadway musicals that DeBose has participated in include Bring It On, Motown: The Musical, Pippin and Hamilton.
DeBose also earned a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of Donna Summer in Summer: The Donna Summer Musical.
The singer and actress was nominated at this year’s Critics Choice Awards in the Best Song category for her performance of “This Wish,” featured in the Disney animated film Wish.
