Ariana Grande apologises for misunderstanding 'weave' comment about 7 Rings song

Ariana Grande has apologised for her response to an Instagram comment regarding a lyric in her new single “7 Rings.”

In the song, Grande sings: “You like my hair? Gee, just bought it,” which prompted one of her followers to comment: “White women talking about their weaves is how we’re gonna solve racism.”

Although the comment may have been written sarcastically, Grande appears not have taken it as such, as she responded to the comment on her Instagram story, writing “so much love.”

A screenshot of the singer’s response was shared on The Shade Room Instagram, where Grande faced backlash for not realising the intent of the comment.

After deleting the story from her own Instagram, Grande apologised in the comments on The Shade Room’s post – and explained her reasoning.

“Hi hi. I think her intention was to be like… yay a white person dissociating the negative stariotype [sic] that is paired with the word ‘weave’... however I’m so sorry my response was out of pocket or if it came across the wrong way.

“Thanks for opening the conversation and like… to everyone for talking to me about it. It’s never my intention to offend anyone.”

On Instagram, some have defended the singer over the incident.

“Leave this queen alone! Y’all always reaching when she’s been one of the least problematic singers out there,” one person wrote.

However, others have called Grande “ignorant” for not understanding the comment’s intent.

In addition to the controversy surrounding the lyric in “7 Rings,” the Sweetener singer has also been accused of plagiarism over the new single.

On Instagram, Princess Nokia, a New York-based rapper, claimed the song was similar to her 2017 song “Mine,” and asked her followers: “Does that sound familiar to you? Because that sounds really familiar to me,” Cosmopolitan reported.
