Arizona plane crash: One dead after aircraft hits Phoenix roadway intersection

A plane crashed into a roadway in Phoenix, Arizona, killing at least one person and injuring another, according to police.

The small, home-built aircraft reportedly crashed near the Deer Valley airport around 6:50 a.m. local time on Monday morning. The identities of the victims were not immediately available, along with information into the cause of the fatal crash.

The plane was an "amateur built" and "experimental" Acroduster aircraft, according to registration records listed by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Aerial footage from local media showed at least one vehicle had endured damage from the crash, as firefighters worked to clear the roadway from the plane’s debris. The road was closed off throughout the morning as authorities investigated the crash.

The accident occurred during the beginning of rush hour just outside of Phoenix’s FBI building. The plane struck two vehicles, causing a gash through the roof of one car, local media reported.

A man was rushed to the hospital after the crash, though it was not immediately clear whether he was a passenger of the plane or a vehicle on the roadway.

The plane crash followed another deadly incident involving a homebuilt aircraft in Phoenix over the weekend.

On Sunday, two people were killed after a plane that had been reported missing for a number of hours was discovered in the rural Camp Verde.

The Deer Valley Airport, which does not serve commercial airlines and has just two runways, did not have its service interrupted by Monday’s crash. The airport includes two flight-training schools and caters to corporate-based aircraft, the Associated Press reported.
