Armed police surrounded a road to "negotiate with a man inside". Pictures of the scene taken by eyewitnesses showed School Lane in Skelmersdale cordoned off between the junctions with Sherratt Street and Neverstich Road.

Police confirmed they were called to a house in Clayton Street, a neighbouring road, to a report of a concern for welfare. Officers were sent to the scene, including some who were armed, and a cordon was placed around a property.

A Lancashire Constabulary spokesperson said there was no threat to the wider public and "the matter was safely resolved around 8.50pm." A man was taken to hospital for assessment, the force added.
