Federico Chiesa will miss Liverpool’s Champions League clash with Bologna on Wednesday night. However, Arne Slot is hopeful that Diogo Jota will overcome a knock and be declared fit to be involved against the Serie A outfit.

The two forwards were both absent from the Reds’ open training session at the AXA Training Centre on Tuesday afternoon, and had looked to be doubts for Liverpool’s Champions League clash with Bologna as a result.

And while Chiesa will miss the game, Slot confirmed that he is hopeful the Italian’s injury will not result in a lengthy lay-off as he anticipated a return after the looming October international break at worst.

“Federico trained with us yesterday (but) came in today with some problems and I am not expecting him to be in the team tomorrow,” the Dutchman admitted. “A pity for us but of course even more for him.

“He was looking forward to a Champions League night at Anfield, especially because we face an Italian team. It is a pity for him he will be there, many more nights to come for him.

“It is always difficult to say how (how long he will be out for) because it only happened yesterday. I am not expecting him to be out for a very long period of time.

“This game is not possible for him and we will have to wait and see if he can manage to be in the team on Saturday. If not, the worst is after the international break.”

Meanwhile, Slot confirmed that while Jota had missed Liverpool’s last two training sessions, he still expected the Portuguese to be available to face Bologna.

Jota, who claimed an assist and won a penalty in the weekend’s 2-1 victory over his former club Wolves, had undergone scans on a foot injury following the win at Molineux. But after they came back clear, his head coach declared Jota fit to play.

“Diogo missed out on two sessions after the game against Wolves,” Slot revealed. “He took a knock. I am expecting him to be with us tomorrow and that he is available to play.”
