Arne Slot makes admission over possible Liverpool transfer 'opportunity' on deadline day
Arne Slot admits he's not expecting Liverpool to complete any more transfers on deadline day. But the Reds boss says that the club could act if they spot an "opportunity" in the market.
Liverpool have had a busy week in the transfer window, with sporting director Richard Hughes securing the signing of Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia on Monday, before the club moved quickly to sign Federico Chiesa from Juventus in a £12m deal confirmed on Thursday.
Marmadashvili will not join up with the Reds until next summer, staying on loan at Valencia, while Chiesa arrives immediately but is unlikely to be included in the squad to for the trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United.
Speaking in his press conference ahead of the match with United, Slot said: "We're happy with the ones we signed because, as I've said many times before, it's difficult to make the team even stronger because we already have a very strong team. So if we find them, we're very happy with that.
"Chiesa is someone who can help us in the short term and Mamardashvili is one of the examples of this club, what they've done in the past at well, they look at the future, long-term of the club. That's why we signed him.
And on deadline day incomings, he added: "I'm not expecting anything but it's not different to all the days before. If we see an opportunity, we could act. But I'm not expecting anything."
"(And on potential outgoings) Same for incomings transfers or loans, if it's the right opportunity for the player and us, we will act. But my main attention is on Man United and not on outgoings."
Georgian goalkeeper Mamardashvili will remain with Valencia for the current campaign before making the switch the Merseyside. The 23-year-old arrives with a burgeoning reputation, having shone for his country at the Euros and in La Liga. He is expected to provide long-term competition for Alisson Becker, who has had offers from Saudi Arabia.
Current second choice goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher impressed in 26 appearances for the Reds last season and has been subject of interest from Nottingham Forest in this window. Slot admitted Kelleher faces an uncertain future at the club.
Asked if Kelleher could consider his future, he said: "Maybe. We have to make decisions as well, it's not only the player. If you work at Liverpool you need competition. We need a lot of good players. Mamardashviliis someone for the long-term. I'm really happy with the goalkeepers we have at the moment. Caoimh is one of them. We're in a good place with the goalkeepers we have for now and for the long-term."
Curtis Jones will not train ahead of the game against United after picking up an injury last week, but Slot confirmed there are no new problems for the Reds this weekend.
