Around 30 homes saved as firefighters take on Feltham inferno sweeping across grassland

Dozens of locals were evacuated from their homes as firefighters took on a huge wildfire raging across west London grassland.

Nearly 30 homes were saved after 70 firefighters worked in “hot, arduous conditions” to tame the flames that broke out in Hereford Road in Feltham at 4.35pm on Sunday.

Neighbours recorded the huge flames licking their garden fences before fleeing their homes.

People living in both Uxbridge and Twickenham reported heavy ash falling from the sky.

Station Commander Tamer Ozdemir, who is at the scene, said: “Firefighters have worked incredibly hard in hot, arduous conditions to stop the blaze spreading to nearby properties.

“Their hard work has saved approximately 30 homes in Hereford Road.

“Around 60 residents were evacuated due to the amount of smoke.

“Our drone team is on scene assisting crews with identifying further hot spots in the surrounding woodland.”

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said the force had taken 44 calls to the blaze. They added: “Firefighters are tackling a blaze involving trees, hedgerows, shrubs and decking at the rear of a number of properties on the road.

“The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.”

The blaze came hours after a baby was pulled from a block of flats on Heathstan Road in Shepherd’s Bush.

Thirty people fled the fire that broke out on a second-floor balcony.

A baby with smoke inhalation has been taken to hospital as a precaution.

Station Commander Matt Brown, who was at the scene, said: “Firefighters are working hard in hot conditions to tackle this blaze, which started on a second floor balcony.

“Residents in the area are advised to close their doors and windows due to the smoke.

“While there are no current road closures, we would ask motorists to please avoid the area where possible as there are a large amount of vehicles at the scene.”
