Arrests Made During Lyon Protest Against France's COVID-19 'Health Pass'

Clashes broke out between police and demonstrators in Lyon, France, on Saturday, July 17, following updates to the country’s COVID-19 mandates.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Monday that vaccines would be mandatory for healthcare workers by September 15. France is also requiring the use of a “health pass,” indicating proof of vaccination or a recent negative COVID-19 test, for certain activities.

This footage shows protesters gathered in Lyon, as loud bangs are heard and a haze fills the sky. Local media reported that police used tear gas “on several occassions” during the protest in Lyon. Officials said nine people were arrested during Saturday’s demonstration.
