Warning: This article contains MAJOR SPOILERS for Arrow season 6 episode 2 'Tribute'.

Arrow has just unleashed a massive twist, one that could have significant repercussions.

In Thursday night's (October 19) episode in the US, Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) – SPOILERS – makes a life-changing decision after the FBI begin investigating claims that he is the Green Arrow.

Oliver manages to get the FBI off his back temporarily, after the leaked photo turns out to be fake. But Oliver, after being told by Agent Samantha Watson that she intends to continue investigating him, chooses to give up vigilantism and the Green Arrow mantle for the sake of his son William.

The new Arrow? None other than John Diggle.

"William is the game-changer," Amell told Entertainment Weekly. "The father-son dynamic can't possibly get any stronger than that.

"For all of the things that Oliver's dad did wrong, and for all the things that we have since learned about him, Oliver still reveres him and holds him up to such a high standard, so that relationship is so important.

"I like the idea that I give it to [Diggle] because the city needs a Green Arrow, right? The Green Arrow can be more than one person. The Green Arrow is a symbol and his team is a symbol."

Amell added that he doesn't expect Oliver to be permanently retired. However, he explained that if and when his character suits up again, it would be in very different circumstances.

"Our show's the show, but that doesn't mean that we can't surprise people," he said. "If he suits back up again, it doesn't mean that all of a sudden it goes back to the status quo."

Also in the episode, Arrow confirmed that Batman (well, Bruce Wayne at least) is indeed part of the DC TV universe.

Arrow airs Thursdays on The CW in the US. Sky One airs the show in the UK.
