Arsenal’s Joel Campbell has made clear his desire to remain at Real Betis after his loan spell in Spain comes to an end.

The Costa Rica international is in his second spell at Betis having spent seven seasons out on loan since first joining Arsenal in 2011.

Campbell has never truly won the trust of Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, despite an impressive run of performances in the 2015-16 season when the Gunners were down to the bare bones.

However Arsenal have struggled to move Campbell out on a permanent basis and once more agreed a loan for the 25-year-old at the start of this season.

Campbell hopes that his stay will be extended and said that it was “a secret for no-one” that he wanted to extend his stay in Spain.

A knee injury suffered on international duty meant Campbell had to wait until Sunday to make his second Betis debut, coming off the bench and scoring in a 6-3 defeat to Valencia.

It could have been worse for Campbell, with the initial prognosis of July’s injury promising a six-month rehabilitation period, and he hopes to make the most of his chance.

He added: “I will try to give my best this season, [hopefully] in the end the club is happy with what I do and they want to bet on me.”
