Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere will miss England's friendly game against Italy on Tuesday as a precaution over an injury.

Wilshere did not travel to Amsterdam with the rest of the Three Lions squad for the match against the Netherlands after England manager Gareth Southgate said the 26-year-old had suffered a minor injury.

He has now returned to Arsenal to work on his fitness and will not re-join the England squad ahead of their friendly against Italy at Wembley next Tuesday.

The Football Association (FA) confirmed the news in a statement on Saturday, saying: "Jack Wilshere will not return to the England camp ahead of Tuesday night’s fixture against Italy at Wembley.

"The Arsenal midfielder didn't travel to Amsterdam as a precaution and will remain with his club.

"Meanwhile, Joe Gomez remains with the squad for further assessment following his 10th minute withdrawal from last night’s win over the Netherlands."

It is believed that Wilshere is still expected to be fit for Arsenal's next Premier League match at home to Stoke on Sunday.

Speaking about Wilshere this week, Southgate admitted the injury he sustained was "nothing serious".

"Jack felt some tendon in his knee. It’s something he’s felt before. It’s nothing too serious.

"Hopefully over the next couple of days that will settle down.

"It’s something that in the past has settled down quickly."
