Former PSG manager Unai Emery has held talks with Arsenal and is the new favourite to succeed Arsene Wenger as Mikel Arteta falls down the pecking order.
The surprise turn of events follows positive discussions in London between both parties and an official announcement could be coming within days.
The Gunners started their search by sounding out former Barcelona boss Luis Enrique, but his wage demands were around double the £8million-a-year Wenger received.
Massimiliano Allegri was also high on the shortlist of candidates drawn up by the Arsenal board, however he has opted to remain at Italian champions Juventus rather than move to the Premier League.
