Arsenal news LIVE: Next manager latest with Mikel Arteta set for 'high-quality' backroom team

Former Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta has emerged as the clear favourite to succeed Arsene Wenger as manager of the club this summer.

The Gunners started their search by sounding out former Barcelona boss Luis Enrique, but his wage demands were around double the £8million-a-year Wenger received.

Massimiliano Allegri was also high on the longlist of candidates drawn up by the Arsenal board, however he is said to be concerned about the proposed transfer budget of around £50m this summer.

It means Arteta is in pole position to return to north London two years after the Spaniard ended his playing career at Emirates Stadium.
