Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has congratulated Wayne Rooney after the striker became Manchester United's all-time leading scorer.

Rooney's superb free-kick rescued a point for United at Stoke on Saturday and saw the England captain move ahead of Sir Bobby Charlton in the club's scoring charts.

And Wilshere, who is currently spending a season on loan at Bournemouth, declared Rooney the best he has ever played alongside.

Alongside a picture of himself alongside Rooney in England colours, Wilshere posted on Facebook: "Unbelievable achievement Wayne Rooney, proper captain and by far the best I have played with #RoleModel."

Speaking after breaking the record on Saturday, Rooney said: "It means a hell of a lot. It is a great honour and I am very proud. It is difficult at the minute to be over-pleased because of the result, but in the grand scheme it is huge honour.

"It is not something I expected when I joined. I am proud and I hope there is more to come.

"The players who have played for this club have been world class."

Rooney broke the club record just over 12 months after becoming England's all-time leading goalscorer, also surpassing Charlton's tally.
