Arsene Wenger refuses to confirm if he will be Arsenal manager next season

Arsene Wenger has refused to confirm whether he will stay on as Arsenal manager next year and insisted he is only focused on winning the Europa League to salvage their season.

Standard Sport revealed in January there is a growing feeling at the club that this could be Wenger’s final season in charge with a review into his position set to take place this summer.

The Gunners have endured another turbulent campaign and look set to miss out on a Premier League top four finish for the second consecutive season.

Wenger’s future appears to hinge on securing a route back into the Champions League by succeeding in Europe’s second-tier competition – the first leg of their Europa League semi-final against Atletico Madrid takes place at Emirates Stadium a week today.

Asked whether he was certain to remain in charge, Wenger said: “Look, my personal situation is not so much my worry at the moment.

"My worry is to transform a season with many disappointments away from home into success and that’s what matters to me.

"As I said the other night, my future is in front of me every time I make a half turn. That’s not my biggest priority.”

It had long been believed that Wenger would determine the timing of his own departure but a failure to challenge for the League title and growing fan unrest at his management has led senior figures at the club to exert greater pressure on the Frenchman, who took charge in 1996.

Questioned as to whether it will still be his decision, Wenger replied: “That doesn’t really matter.

"As I told you, my main worry is Arsenal and I think if you have to give me some credit, if you look back at my career, you would have to accept that my priority was always the interest of Arsenal.”

Before facing Atletico, Arsenal host West Ham in the League and Aaron Ramsey will be available after recovering from a gashed leg sustained against CSKA Moscow last week.

Jack Wilshere is also expected to recover from an ankle problem while Henrikh Mkhitaryan has an outside chance of featuring against Atletico as he bids to overcome a knee injury.

Wenger has heavily rotated his squad for League games with one eye on prioritising the Europa League but he said: “This weekend is as well a preparation for Thursday.

"I rested some players after the Moscow game [at Newcastle], and they will need a game. It’s not so much rest, it’s more preparation.”
