Arthur boss teases 'additional content' after the show's cancellation

Arthur, the beloved children's TV series that has been running since 1996, has been cancelled.

The show has been consistently praised for being both educational and entertaining, covering important issues through beloved characters like Buster and DW.

It also spawned a whole host of memes, and its theme song (from Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers) is endlessly iconic — don't pretend you aren't singing it in your head right now.

The show's executive producer Carol Greenwald confirmed the sad news in a statement (via IGN), but said that the franchise itself isn't necessarily ending here.

The statement reads: "In the winter of 2022, the 25th and final season of Arthur will debut. Arthur will continue to be available on PBS Kids for years to come.

"Producer GBH and PBS Kids are continuing to work together on additional Arthur content, sharing the lessons of Arthur and his friends in new ways."

Back in 2019, the show revealed the long-running character Mr Ratburn was gay in an episode where he got married to another man, well, rat-man.

The show didn't treat his sexuality as a big deal, with the kids being more surprised that teachers actually had social lives outside of school.

Arthur currently aired 24 seasons and around 250 episodes so far, although a lot of the recent seasons have been made up of less than 10 episodes each.

Arthur aired on PBS in the US.
