Glasgow could soon have its own artisan 'bakery quarter' after the city's oldest bakers revealed plans to open a shop in the west end.

Bavarian Bakehouse's new venue is on Hyndland Street, just a few doors away from the original Das Brot shop that was a staple for locals in the 90s and early 2000s, known especially for its Challah bread.

It'll be joining the likes of Kaf, Lily Bakes Cakes and Plant Blonde on the same street, as well as Big Bear Bakery in nearby Dowanhill Street, and creating what is fast becoming the go-to spot for baked goods in the city. Take that, southside...

Owner Kathleen McShane, who lives near the bakery, said: “We’re excited to open a shop that allows us to engage directly with our customers again. While our products are already loved in cafes and restaurants across the city, having a physical storefront is something we’ve always dreamed of. “

Bavarian Bakehouse was started in 1984 by a Scottish/German family, and the McShanes took over in 2011 before moving the business to premises in Cumbernauld, in 2017.

The company bakes fresh and delivers daily to the west and central belt of Scotland, supplying venues including Royal Troon Golf Club, Innis & Gunn and Roots and Fruits, and has become known for high-quality, handmade products such as sourdough, pretzels, cakes, and pastries. The company also uses a sourdough starter as old as the business itself.

The new shop will feature these well-loved staples and act as a testing ground for new products. It will also serve coffee sourced from Thomsons’ Coffee, Glasgow’s oldest roaster.

Kathleen added that the Hyndland Street location is significant for the bakery, as it marks a return to its roots. She said: “This location is steeped in our history. The previous owners ran a very popular shop on the same road and now we’re back, part of a neighbourhood that values real, authentic food. From butchers and fishmongers to the farmers’ market, it’s an area that celebrates quality and tradition, which is exactly what we stand for.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming everyone and becoming part of their daily lives, whether they’re stopping in for a coffee and pretzel or picking up fresh bread for their table. Our new shop will be a place for people to experience the warmth and care that goes into every product we make.”

The company has previously catered for high-profile events like the Commonwealth Games, Ryder Cup, and The Open Golf Championship. Celebrities such as Noel Gallagher and the Foo Fighters have enjoyed their artisan rolls and pastries, with the Oasis frontman once calling their sourdough rolls the best he’d ever tasted during the 2014 MTV Europe Music Awards at Kelvingrove.
