Artist Christo passes away at 84

Artist Christo - known for his large-scale public installations - has passed away at the age of 84.

He was known for wrapping bridges and buildings such as Reichstag German parliament in 1995, just six years after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Christo was from Bulgaria, which he escaped during a time of communism in 1957.

Some of his best-known pieces include "The Gates" in Central Park, New York, where he lived for 56 years.

He unveiled the exhibit with wife and art partner Jeanne-Claude alongside New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg in 2005.

His most recent installation was "The London Mastaba" a 20-metre high sculpture of an ancient Egyptian tomb, made from more than 7500 red, white and mauve barrels on a lake in Hyde Park in 2018.

Christo also had plans to wrap the Arc de Triomphe in Paris - a project still on track to be released in 2021.
