Ash and Lava Tumble Down Mountainside After Stromboli Eruption

Mount Stromboli, the volcano on the small Italian island of the same name, sent a cloud of ash a kilometer into the sky on November 16 in what the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) said was a major eruption.

This clip, from the INGV, shows a close-up view of the eruption.

The eruption sent a pyroclastic current down the Sciara del Fuoco, a depression on Stromboli, which rapidly reached the coast line and stretched out into the sea for 200 meters, officials said. Credit: INGV via Storyful
