Australia vs England | Ashes first Test | The Gabba

The story so far (by David Clough)

England finished on 196-4 as close on day one of the first Ashes Test in Brisbane

Captain Joe Root became Pat Cummins' second victim of the day as Australia made further inroads following a solid start from the tourists.

Australia used their first review of the day to good effect after Root was hit on the pads to go for 15, leaving England on 163 for four after a second scalp for Cummins, who had dismissed Mark Stoneman for 53 just before tea.

That broke up a solid partnership between Stoneman and James Vince, who put on 125 for the second wicket after Alastair Cook had been dismissed for just two at the start of the day.

Vince was looking good for a maiden Test century until he gambled on a quick single and was undone by brilliant fielding from Nathan Lyon, who scooped up the ball one-handed and comfortably threw him out for 83.
