Ashling Murphy, a 23-year-old primary school teacher, murdered while out for a run

Ashling Murphy, a 23-year-old primary school teacher, was tragically killed on Wednesday afternoon along the banks of the Grand Canal in Tullamore, County Offaly.

She was out for a run. It was 4pm.

On Wednesday, a 40-year-old man had been arrested but was released on Thursday night, as it was confirmed that the man was now 'no longer a suspect'.

The attack took place at a popular running and walking route known as Fiona's Way, named after Fiona Pender, a heavily pregnant woman who disappeared in August 1996.

An appeal for witnesses has been launched and the Gardaí are asking anyone with information about a 'Falcon Storm mountain bike' with 'straight handlebars and distinctive yellow/green front forks' to come forward.

According to a BBC report, Murphy died at the scene and the Gardaí said they believe she was killed by one man who acted alone.

It is believed the suspect fled when two women came across the attack.

Gardaí investigating the murder have said 'no stone will be left unturned' in bringing her killer to justice.

Many have taken to social media to post messages of sadness and condolences, sharing the message 'She was out for a run', alongside comments and stories from women expressing how they don't feel safe if running alone.

Vigils are to be held across the country in Ashling’s memory.
