Ashwood Spencer Academy wants to knock down building and add four new classrooms
New plans to significantly improve and upgrade a Derby primary school have been submitted to the council. A planning application calls for permission to demolish a small school building within the grounds of Ashwood Spencer Academy in the Allenton/Osmaston area of the city.
The building will then be replaced with a new modern learning facility featuring four additional classrooms for the school. It will also comprise an entrance lobby /cloaks area, toilets and a store room. The school is situated off Amber Road and welcomes pupils aged between three and 11 years old.
Plans were submitted to Derby City Council on Monday, January 20. The council could make a final decision on the application as soon as March, but times can be subject to change.

It is said that the ridge height of the new building will be below the school’s surrounding buildings and “will therefore cause no material harm to the character of the existing buildings or surrounding area”.
A planning document on behalf of Ashwood Spencer Academy said: “The proposed use of the new modular building will provide four additional classrooms for the education of up to 120 pupils. This is to replace the existing modular building which is to be demolished prior to works commencing on the new building.

“The benefits that result from the building provide a significant improvement to the school and the size of the modular building allows for future growth. The entrance adopts a user-friendly design and provides a wide entry point for large groups and wheelchair users.
“The proposal will have no harmful effects on the neighbouring community buildings or shops. It is situated well within the boundary of the main school site on an area of previously utilised building curtilage. Pupils will be gaining a brand new classroom building, an improved learning environment to the current modular building.”
No trees, shrubs or hedgerows are to be removed as part of the development and access to the car park will be retained unaltered.
