Assisted dying - how did your MP vote in Birmingham and the Black Country

MPs across Birmingham and the Black Country wrestled with their consciences, drawing on personal experiences and the stories of constituents, and in some cases on their faith, as they voted on new assisted dying legislation.

Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood, MP for Birmingham Ladywood, and her Health Secretary colleague Wes Streeting were among the most prominent of the 'No' votes. But it was the 'ayes' that held sway, with 330 votes in favour and 275 against Kim Leadbeater's Private Members' Bill.

It means that for the first time MPs are to actively work towards introducing a law to legalise assisted dying. Sir Keir Starmer, Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper voted for the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill.

The five hour debate earlier today was praised for its tone and the compassion displayed by members as they spoke up for or against the Bill. Andrew Mitchell, MP for Sutton Coldfield, recalled being moved to tears by constituents' stories of the 'agonising' end of life experiences endured by loved ones as the motivation for voting Yes.

Paulette Hamilton, MP for Birmingham Erdington, drew on her experiences as a nurse and her fears that legalising assisted dying might shift focus away from better funding and supporting palliative and hospice care as she voted No.
