Aston Villa have paid tribute to club legend Gary Shaw in their first Champions League clash against BSC Young Boys this evening.

Shaw passed away on Monday after being in serious condition in hospital after suffering injuries from a fall. He is regarded as one of the best forwards to have ever played for Villa after scoring 79 goals in 213 appearances.

A year before playing a key role in Villa's European triumph in 1982, Shaw was voted PFA Young Player of the Year having contributed 18 goals when Villa won the First Division title. Villa are playing their first game in Europe's elite club competition for over 41 years tonight and Unai Emery's players are wearing black armbands in memory of Shaw.

"Gary Shaw, Gary Shaw, when he gets the ball he’s bound to score, Gary Gary Shaw" was heard before kick-off and poignantly on the eighth minute.

The number eight shirt was handed to him by another Villa legend Brian Little. He enjoyed a nine-year playing career with Villa from 1971 to 1980, before becoming manager of the club 14 years later and paid his respects to Shaw on social media platform X on Monday.

Little posted: "Gave Shawsy my number 8 shirt when I retired.. he took it to another level….R.I.P. xx"

Around 15 minutes before kick-off, the Young Boys public announcer asked for all fans to join in applause as a picture of Shaw was shown on the big screens.

The PA said: “Aston Villa fans, one of your legends passed away yesterday. Everyone at BSC Young Boys wants to extend their wishes to his family, friends and all supporters.”
