Aston Villa will reportedly pay €5million in bonuses to Villarreal for the signing of Pau Torres after certain conditions were met last season.

El Periodico Mediterraneo claims that bonus payment Villa are due to pay is split into two sections. The first was related to how many minutes Torres played in his debut season with the club and he exceeded the amount.

The other condition was for Champions League qualification, which Villa managed with a fourth-placed finish ahead of Tottenham Hotspur. Villa's place in the top four was secured before the final day after Spurs lost to champions Manchester City at home on the Tuesday of the final week of the season.

Torres’ impact at Villa was nothing short of transformational after joining from Villarreal for a fee of €33million. He allows Villa to control games more and dominate possession in the opposition half. It’s that control which puts Villa in a much stronger position to beat opponents below them in the league table as they make more chances and sustain pressure.

Before Boubacar Kamara suffered an injury, the balance which Emery had at the back of Kamara, Konsa and Torres was perfect. It was the base which allowed Luiz to enjoy freedom in midfield and enabled Leon Bailey to stay high and wide.

Torres is key to how Villa progresses the ball and he recorded the fourth highest progressive carrying distance in the Premier League. He was one of the best signings any top-flight side made last summer.
