At least 30 injured after express train derails in Japan following collision with fruit truck

At least 30 people have been injured after an express train derailed in the Japanese city of Yokohama following a collision with a truck.

Shocking pictures show the twisted wreckage of three of the train’s eight carriages derailed following the crash on Thursday, which left the truck ablaze.

According to reports, the train driver tried to brake when he saw the truck in the crossing in Yokohama but couldn’t stop in time.

The truck, which was carrying fruit, was crushed between the train and a wall and caught fire immediately after the collision.

At least 30 people were injured, with some reports suggesting the train driver was killed, though others said he suffered serious injuries.

Other passengers on board the train - which was carrying 500 people - suffered superficial injuries.

Images showed the train derailed and tilted alongside the mangled truck, while others showed fruit from the truck littered around the scene.

Authorities said they were investigating the cause of the incident.

One passenger said she heard the train’s whistle blow for a long time before she felt the crash while another passenger in the front carriage of the train told national broadcaster NHK that the train suddenly stopped after he heard a honking, and then he saw a fire.
