Athens Food Delivery Workers Protest Work Conditions

Food delivery workers protested against their working conditions in Athens on September 22, amid a backlash against the delivery company Efood, which messaged more than 100 contractors saying they would have to become freelancers.

Video shows a motorcade of delivery workers and their supporters during what local media said was a four-hour work stoppage.

On September 15, the company sent a text message to 115 employees, local media said, saying there was no possibility of renewing existing contracts unless they became freelancers.

Efood has since said the message was a “miscommunication” and that the wording of the message did “not express the company’s philosophy and culture”.

Efood said it had “no intention of creating a climate of insecurity for the distributors, but instead offered … a new way of working with the company” to a group whose contracts were due to expire at the end of September. Credit: @enwsilogistwn via Storyful
