Clint Capela out at least another two weeks, delaying Hawks debut even longer

Clint Capela will have to wait a while before making his debut with the Atlanta Hawks.

It will be “weeks” before Capela, who was dealing with a right calcaneus contusion and plantar fasciitis before he was traded to Atlanta, will see the court, coach Lloyd Pierce said on Wednesday, via the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“Clint is just trying to figure out what he can tolerate each day,” Pierce said, via the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “He is working out. You don’t see a whole lot of movement. That is pretty much where he is at this stage.”

Capela started “participating in modified shooting” drills, the team announced on Wednesday, though is still in “non-impact conditioning and strength work.” He will be evaluated again in two weeks.

Capela has averaged 13.9 points and 13.8 rebounds so far this season, his sixth in the league. He was acquired by the Hawks in a massive four-team, 12-man trade just before the deadline earlier this month, though has not played in eight of the past nine games.

At best, Capela could make his debut for Atlanta’s road game against the Wizards on March 6.

Though it’s disappointing for the Hawks that both he and Skal Labissiere — who the Hawks acquired from Portland and is currently out with a left knee injury — are on the sidelines, Pierce isn’t rushing anything.

He’s just going to take what he can get from the two this season.

“The guy is hurt,” Pierce said, via the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “You can’t plan for what you want to see or how you want to see it. We understood both of those guys were injured prior to [the trades]. When you are coming off injuries, you have to take a lot of that with a grain of salt in terms of how much they are really going to be able to show, how much they really are going to be able to contribute and what you can gain from that.

“Any sample size we can get this year, with either guy, specifically with Clint, but any sample size we can get will be tremendous. It’s still more than none.”
