Atlanta Man Who Killed 'Longtime Friend' Over $35 Debt Sentenced to Life in Prison
Rickey Carter fatally shot Quinlan Parker over a $35 debt in January 2022
An Atlanta man has been sentenced to life in prison after fatally shooting his longtime friend over a $35 debt.
Rickey Carter was found guilty in DeKalb County Superior Court on Monday and sentenced to life plus five years by Judge Tangela Barrie, according to a news release from the Dekalb County District Attorney’s Office on Tuesday. Carter, 65, had been charged with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
Carter shot and killed Quinlan Parker on Jan. 28, 2022. Police responded to a call of a person shot at an Atlanta apartment and found Parker, 48, dead from a gunshot wound to his chest.
Prior to Parker’s death, Carter had arrived at his apartment, where his wife and stepdaughter also were at the time. The "longtime friends" got into an argument over money that Parker borrowed from Carter “a few weeks earlier,” per the release, and Parker’s stepdaughter began recording the altercation on her phone after she “heard yelling.”

According to the release, Parker’s wife saw Carter pull out “a small black handgun” and then heard a gunshot. Carter tried to claim self-defense, but in the recording captured by Parker’s stepdaughter, Parker can be seen “backing away from Carter before he opened fire," per the release.
Parker’s wife performed CPR on her husband before paramedics arrived but he did not survive the gunshot wound. Parker owed Carter $35, according to the release.
