Audi do that? Blundering binman crashes into garage crushing £12,000 car inside

Now that’s rubbish.

A bungling bin lorry driver hit a garage on his rounds, causing it to collapse and crush a £12,000 Audi  S4 convertible inside.

The car, which belongs to Mario Kyriacou from Colchester, has been completely written-off.

To add insult to injury, Mr Kyriacou heard the crash as he was at home at the time, but had no idea at first that his car was involved.

The bizarre incident happened on Thursday when the local binmen were on their weekly rounds.

“I was at home and I was on the phone and then I heard the binmen coming,” he said.

“Normally they’re very loud anyway because we live in flats so they lift up mini-skips instead of wheely bins.

“When I heard the bang I thought it was them dropping one of those bins. It was a really really bad sound which I even thought it might have been a car crash.

“There was even a slight vibration.”

After a neighbour knocked on Mr Kyriacou’s door at 4pm he was told of the garage’s destruction.

“I ran down and of course I was swearing quite a bit. I was so upset, I had all these emotions that you would have after seeing the car you love like that.

“But by that time someone had already come and put up barriers. It had happened at 11:15 and they must have done that within the hour.”

By then the guilty lorry driver had fled the scene leaving only a business card for Mr Kyriacou to contact.

When the driver spoke to the insurance company the council told him to ring he was told that they had not admitted liability yet.

Last night Colchester Council said it “regretted” the car’s damage and was investigating.

Mr Kyriacou added that the car was in immaculate condition and would have been worth £40,000 brand new.

A neighbour’s Triumph motorcycle was also crushed by the car port’s collapsing roof.

Mr Kyriacou said: “I am still in shock, it is disbelief and I’m very upset indeed. But what can you do?”

He added: “They did leave details so I expect they’ll sort it out I guess.”

A Colchester Council spokesman described the incident as “unfortunate”.

They added: “We regret the incident and we are following our procedures.

“We are in the process of involving our insurers.”
