New coronavirus variants highlight the need for countries to do their own research and development on COVID-19 vaccines, said a senior Philippines trade official, adding that people will only be safe once the whole world is vaccinated. The Philippines is looking to work with its trading partners on this as vaccine demand is unlikely to wane anytime soon, said Allan Gepty, assistant secretary at the Department of Trade and Industry in an interview at the Reuters Next conference. The new COVID-19 variants highlight that "we have to continue doing our respective research and development in this area because there is a truism that …no one is safe unless everyone is safe," said Gepty.

At first glance, the half-built Orthodox church in the heart of Kosovo's capital seems little more than a napping spot for stray dogs splayed out in a patch of unkempt weeds near the padlocked entrance.
Number 10 has stressed that Christmas parties should not be cancelled and there are no rules limiting their size after conflicting comments from ministers and officials in recent days. The discovery of the Omicron variant of coronavirus has prompted speculation about how Britons should be approaching festive celebrations this year. As scientists work to assess the risk of the variant, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has reintroduced mandatory mask-wearing in some settings in England, while also tightening self-isolation rules and travel restrictions.
Christmas parties this year should not see “much snogging under the mistletoe”, a Cabinet minister has said, as Boris Johnson faced questions over a Downing Street event that reportedly took place during last year’s lockdown.

Early indications suggest most Omicron coronavirus cases are mild, an official at the World Health Organisation (WHO) has said. An official, speaking on behalf of the organisation, said there is no evidence to suggest the efficacy of vaccines has been reduced by the new strain - but did say some mutations of the virus indicate an increased risk of quicker transmission. It comes as a top official in Botswana's health ministry said on Tuesday that 16 out of the 19 cases of the Omicron variant detected in the country were asymptomatic.
As reports of Christmas party cancellations mount due to Covid concerns, Labour Leader Sir Keir Starmer has said Labour are not planning to cancel their celebrations but will "look at them event by event". He added the public needs "clarity" from the government on coronavirus guidelines this Christmas and said he would "like to see the government actually obeying the rules this year which they didn't do last year".
Sir Keir Starmer has got strong players in the right positions while Boris Johnson is busy losing his dressing room. Perhaps the Conservative Party always intended it to be that way. If so, all the more reason why everyone in Labour needs to be aware of that trap and avoid falling into it, as we have recently done.
Fatigue was the most common symptom affecting people with the condition, followed by shortness of breath.
'People don't need to change their Christmas plans': Health Secretary
Shadow Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds says "if there is one thing" known about Boris Johnson, it is that he "doesn't believe" rules apply to him. He concedes that expanding the booster campaign "is the right thing to do" but thinks the government needs to back the Test and Trace system to stop disruption to people's lives.
Hong Kong authorities will launch a new "health code" mobile phone application next week that travellers to mainland China would be required to use as the city prepares for a partial reopening of the border with the rest of the country. The app will be similar to one in China, storing a user's name, address and vaccination status, with a function to scan QR codes to enter restaurants and other venues. Unlike China's app, Hong Kong's will not track a user's movement, the government said.
