August Bank Holiday: Londoners face weekend of travel chaos as engineering works close stations across the capital

Passengers travelling in and around London over the Bank Holiday weekend face a myriad of travel woes as engineering works will result in rail closures and suspensions across the capital.

A number of large-scale projects will close key routes in and out of London over the weekend, with extensive works at Euston coinciding with ongoing upgrades at Waterloo.

In addition, disruption is expected as a result of Notting Hill Carnival - which will see hundreds of thousands of revellers descending on west London for festivities.

Here is a summary of travel disruptions to watch out for over the holiday weekend:

London Euston

All trains to and from Euston station will be halted on Saturday and Sunday due to engineering works for HS2 and, to coincide with the closures, Network Rail is carrying out maintenance work between Watford Junction and Euston.

Passengers have been warned against travelling in and out of the capital unless "absolutely necessary" to avoid severe delays and overcrowded trains and buses.

Those who do travel into other London stations face extensive queues for replacement services and diversions.

Trains will be diverted to Kings Cross, St Pancras and Marylebone and some services will only run as far south as Northampton.

Passengers are warned that all trains will be “extremely busy” and there are expected to be severe queues at alternative stations.

Waterloo

Ten platforms at Waterloo Station are closed until Tuesday August 29 as part of an £800 million Network Rail programme – causing significant reduction in South West Trains services.

Passengers have been advised to use alternative routes where possible to avoid congestion in the station.

The project, involving an army of 1,000 Network Rail engineers, is set to extend platforms for longer trains to make room for more passengers.

Platforms 1-9 have been closed, while platforms 20-24 will temporarily open with limited services operating.

Wimbledon, Earlsfield, Richmond, Clapham Junction and Vauxhall are expected to be busier as a result of the closures.

Charing Cross and Cannon Street

Engineering works are taking place around London Bridge area as part of the Thameslink upgrade programme.

This will mean Southeastern service from Charing Cross, Waterloo East or London Bridge (except trains to and from Hastings) will be suspended until September 2.

London Cannon Street station will also be closed on Saturday and Sunday.

Over the weekend an amended timetable will be in operation, with trains diverted to and from London Victoria, London Blackfriars or New Cross.

And buses will replace trains between New Cross and Charlton via Greenwich.

On Monday, trains will run to and from London Victoria or London Cannon Street and trains between London and Hastings will run to and from London Bridge via Redhill.

There will be no Southeastern trains at London Blackfriars.

Liverpool Street

Ongoing Crossrail works mean that, on Sunday and Monday, no trains will run between Ingatestone, Billericay, Shenfield, Barking and London Liverpool Street.

Services that usually run between Shoeburyness and London Liverpool Street will be diverted to London Fenchurch Street.

Customers travelling to or from Stratford will be able to complete their journeys using the Jubilee Line between Stratford and West Ham at no additional cost.

TfL Rail

Due to track improvements and Crossrail construction works, there will be no service between Liverpool Street and Shenfield on TfL Rail lines on Sunday.

Replacement buses will operate between Stratford and Romford and between Newbury Park and Shenfield.

Central lines will be running between Liverpool Street and Stratford or Newbury Park.

London Overground

There will be no service on London Overground lines between Romford and Upminster on Sunday and Monday and no service between Clapham Junction and Willesden Junction on Sunday before 11am.

Customers have been advised to use local bus routes.

Due to the HS2 works at Euston, there will be no service between Euston and Watford Junction on Saturday and Sunday.

And as a result of upgrade works, services between Gospel Oak and Barking will be suspended from 7pm on Saturday to 3.30pm on Sunday and there will be no service between South Tottenham and Barking until 7pm on Saturday.

Rail replacement buses will be in operation.

DLR

The DLR will be suspended between Stratford and Bow Church on Sunday and Monday due to Crossrail works.

There will be no replacement bus service operating so customers are advised to use local bus services.

Tube

There are no engineering works planned on the Tube network over the weekend, but stations in west London are likely to be extremely busy on Sunday and Monday due to Notting Hill Carnival.

Buses and roads

Traffic and buses around west London will be severely disrupted due to Notting Hill Carnival on Sunday and Monday.

Roads will be closed in the Notting Hill, Ladbroke Grove and Westbourne Park areas, with a large number of pedestrians expected.

Buses around west London will be on diversion or will terminate earlier than usual.

A 48-hour walk-out by bus staff over the weekend could worsen traffic chaos during the carnival.

More than 400 controllers are set to strike between August 27 and August 29 in a row over pay sparking fears of widespread disruption across the capital.
