A marine tour guide captured up close footage of two humpbacks near the whale-watching hotspot of Hervey Bay, Queensland, in a video posted to Facebook on August 13.
In the video shot by Peter Lynch, a distorted, dark shape can be spotted under the pristine Pacific waters. He drops below the ocean’s surface, revealing the two massive marine mammals in close proximity to himself and his vessel.
Lynch, who has worked with sea animals for over three decades, told Storyful the humpbacks were sub-adult whales that “often approach vessels for a really close look and just mill about.”
“Humpback whales enter the Bay between July and the end of October to rest, socialise, and do a spot of people watching as seen here,” he said. Credit: Blue Dolphin Marine Tours via Storyful
