Critically acclaimed Australian drama The Heights is coming to the UK.

BBC One has announced it has acquired the rights to the first two series of the soap, which will begin airing in a daytime slot on June 15. The second series will follow later this year.

The Heights is set in the inner-city neighbourhood of Arcadia Heights and follows "the relationships, work and hurdles faced by six families living in a tower block in a rapidly gentrifying inner-city district".

Speaking about the series, Carla-Maria Lawson, Head of BBC Daytime and Early Peak, said: "This slice of life from the melting pot that is urban Australia is loaded with humour and drama and quickly draws you into the very diverse lives of its characters.

"Daytime viewers love drama with compelling storytelling at its heart and The Heights does that brilliantly."

Alastair McKinnon, Managing Director, Matchbox Pictures, added: "Australian viewers have taken the diverse mix of families living in Arcadia Heights to their hearts and we are enormously proud of the show.

"With British viewers' undoubted enthusiasm for Australian soap operas, we feel very excited about the potential for The Heights on BBC One."

After The Heights began airing in Australia last February, the soap was praised by some as a more progressive and diverse alternative to Neighbours and Home and Away.

Responding to the comparisons, Neighbours scriptwriter Sarah Mayberry tweeted: "I am already furious about the way the show is being written off.

"The implication that we did our first LGBTQI story last year is so wide off the mark, I can't even.

"The Heights will live or die on its own merits, and it will be built on the platform created by Neighbours and Home and Away, and it will benefit from the vast pool of talented writers that Neighbours and Home and Away have produced over the years."
