Australia’s summer broke 205 weather records, a climate group has warned.

Parts of the country experienced their highest temperatures and worst rainfall, warned The Climate Council

They say the extreme weather conditions showed climate change was being felt across Australia, and which other experts have warned could get worse in the foreseeable future.

In a report entitled “Angry Summer”, the council claimed Australia’s weather was marked by intense heatwaves, bushfires and heavy flooding.

Among the unwanted records set, was the hottest summer on record for Sydney, Brisbane and Canberra, a New South Wales town, Moree, experiencing 54 consecutive days of temperatures 35°C (95 degrees Fahrenheit) or above and Perth receiving its highest ever amount of summer rain, almost 200 mm.

“We’re experiencing unprecedented extreme heat and setting new records at an alarming rate, with every part of Australia feeling the impact,” said the council’s Will Steffen.

“Extreme weather will continue to intensify through this century if we continue to sit on our hands and fail to move rapidly to get fossil fuels out of our economy.”

The report also warned that the weather would also impact on electricity networks due to increased demand in the future.
