Authorities Investigating After Kyiv Bomb Shelter Fails to Open During Deadly Attack

Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko said authorities were investigating why a bomb shelter failed to open during deadly overnight missile strikes on the Ukrainian capital on Thursday, June 1.

Three people, including a woman and at least one child, were killed in Kyiv’s Desnyanskyi District due to debris from the missiles, Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne reported. The woman’s husband told Suspilne his wife died after she could not open the shelter door.

“There was an alarm, people ran to the shelter,” the man said. “The shelter simply would not open and that was it. People knocked, and at that moment it flew in.”

Klitschko had earlier said two children were killed by debris.
