Massive Stash of Cocaine Discovered Camouflaged in Sacks of Sugar

Authorities seized 971 kilograms (2,140 pounds) of cocaine camouflaged in sacks of sugar at a port in Colombia on Thursday, September 19.

This footage released by General William Rene Salamanca Ramirez, the director general of the national police of Colombia, shows a police dog sniffing bags of sugar in a port in Santa Marta, Colombia. Dozens of packets can then be seen laid out on a floor.

Ramirez said that the bags of cocaine were en route to Belgium and were estimated to be worth 34 million euros (over 37 million US dollars). He said that the police operation revealed that drug traffickers changed the traditional rectangular shape of the cocaine packages to avoid detection by cargo scanners.

According to a local news report, another maritime operation carried out around the same time resulted in the Colombian Navy seizing a ton of cocaine from a boat. Credit: General William René Salamanca Ramírez via Storyful
