Avalanche Kills at Least 16 in Indian Himalayas

Sixteen people were confirmed dead after an avalanche struck the Mount Draupadi Ka Danda 2 peak near Uttarkashi, India, on Thursday, October 6, according to police reports.

Local news reported that the avalanche struck a team of climbers from the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering in Uttarkashi when they were returning from summiting Draupadi’s Danda-2 peak.

Authorities said heliborne operations had been suspended due to weather conditions, and the evacuation of bodies with resume on Friday, October 7, if conditions allowed.
