Avatar 2 confirms digital release date

Avatar: The Way of Water finally has a digital release date.

From visionary filmmaker James Cameron, this sequel to 2009's sci-fi epic takes viewers away from the twisting jungles of Pandora and into the vast oceans to meet the Metkayina reef clan. In the reef, Jake Sully, Neytiri and their family take refuge from the wrath of an avatar Colonel Quaritch.

The sequel film premieres on digital platforms on Tuesday, April 4 in the UK, including major retailers such as Apple TV, Prime Video and the Sky Store. In the US, it has a slightly earlier release date of Tuesday, March 28.

The digital release also includes hours of bonus features, such as 'Building the World of Pandora', 'The Sounds of Pandora', 'Becoming Na'vi' and 'Pandora's Next Generation'.

Meanwhile, Cameron himself recently announced that Sam Worthington's patriarch Jake won't provide the narration for the third Avatar movie. That responsibility will instead fall to Britain Dalton's character Lo'ak.

"Lo'ak really emerged [in Avatar: The Way of Water] as a character that people went with. So I might find ways to… he's already the narrator [for Avatar 3]," Cameron told Soundtracking host Edith Bowman.

"I'm giving away something here, but this is OK. I think it could be intriguing for people to think about what's coming.

Cameron added: "Jake was our voiceover narrator for movie one and for movie two, and we have a different narrator for each of the subsequent films.

"We see it through the eyes of a different character. Movie three is through Lo'ak's eyes."

According to the director, Avatar 3 remains on schedule for its December 20, 2024 release date.

Avatar: The Way of Water is now playing in cinemas worldwide. The first film is streaming on Disney+.
