Marvel and How I Met Your Mother star Cobie Smulders' series Stumptown has been cancelled, despite the fact that it was renewed for a second season by network ABC this spring.

Deadline reports that the planned second season has now been dropped due to timing issues, with delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic meaning that the show would not be ready for its planned autumn 2020 return.

Deadline writes that the series, which hadn't yet started production on season two, was also impacted by a change in showrunner and creative direction at the end of its first season, which could have meant that the new season wouldn't be ready until April 2021.

But all hope isn't lost for the crime drama as its studio ABC Signature is reportedly planning to try and find a new home for it on another network, so there may still be more news to come.

Stumptown is based on a graphic novel series created by Greg Rucka and Matthew Southworth. It stars Smulders as military veteran Dex Parios, a woman suffering from PTSD who is now trying to make a life for herself and her younger brother Ansel (Cole Sibus) in Portland, Oregon – with Stumptown being a nickname for the city.

In order to take care of herself and Ansel, and pay off her large gambling debts, Dex becomes a private investigator to help solve cases the police can't get involved in.

New Girl actor Jake Johnson also stars as Grey McConnell, an ex-con who now owns a bar and is close friends with Dex and Ansel, while Jacob's Ladder star Michael Ealy plays Dex's contact at the Portland Police Bureau, Detective Miles Hoffman.

Stumptown isn't the first show to have been cancelled after a new season pick-up this year, with Netflix recently dropping previously renewed shows The Society and I Am Not OK With This.
