Theory that Avril Lavigne 'died' and clone has taken her place is back on Twitter

Who doesn’t love a good conspiracy theory, eh?

Twelve years ago a morbid rumour that Avril Lavigne committed suicide and a body double took over all of her red carpet duties, interviews and appearances, did the rounds in the media and gained some surprising traction as conspiracy theories go.

Earlier today fans of the ‘Sk8er Boi’ singer were dragged back down the rabbit hole when the theory blew up again on Twitter, of course!

User ‘givenchyass’ set the rumours alight after claiming the singer has been dead for a while and took her own life in 2003.

The original theory was based on the conclusion that Avril was 18 when she was thrust into the spotlight, and found the paparazzi attention hard to cope with.

The ‘I’m With You’ singer apparently found a girl named Melissa Vandella who looked exactly like her, and the pair became close friends as well as Avril employing her to take over some of her press commitments.

What’s more, aaccording to the theorists, Avril taught Melissa how to sing like her.

The hoax goes on to explain that Avril killed herself after the death of her beloved grandfather in 2003.

“She basically lost it. she was so distraught, crying on stage and in interviews. she would lock herself in her apartment and write for weeks,” Givenchyass writes.

And rather than let Avril’s career crumble after her supposed death, the theorists believe her record label and those close to her used her lookalike to play the punk princess.

Some users even got angry today and used the hashtag #NotMyAvril, with one saying on twitter: “This is a case for the FBI” and others pointing out that Avril would never promote a slimming product, as seen in the picture below.

In real life, Avril has going through a divorce from her Nickelback frontman husband, Chad Kroeger, and has been battling lyme disease.
