Juice up those Megazords because we have a lot more Power Rangers coming our way.

Your favourite TV guilty pleasure from the '90s is about to embark on a 21st century reboot, with the teen angst upped and the kitchiness of the original series toned down in favour of a grittier feel.

Mileage may vary on how successful a more adult Power Rangers rebranding will do, but its franchise creator Haim Saban seems committed to bringing a long-form storyline over multiple movies.

"We already have a six-movie story arc," Saban has now told Variety, adding: "If this film is as successful as I hope on March 24, on March 25 we'll have the first story meeting for Movie No. 2."

As for why the reboot ditches most of campiness that made the original so fun, Saban explained: "Today's young audience is much more sophisticated.

"Think about movies like Jungle Book and Arrival. The effects are mind-boggling. So does the young audience expect more? You bet they do - and they will have it."

In this case, "more" means encouraging tweaks like making the Yellow Ranger the first-ever LGBTQ superhero in a Hollywood movie or exploring autism through the eyes of the Blue Ranger.

On the downside, "more" also means literally basing the new Goldar on an actual chocolate fountain… because nothing is scarier than dripping confections!

All of these changes doesn't mean that Power Rangers is abandoning its heritage entirely. A recent cast list confirmed that there will be at least two huge nods to the franchise's golden age.

Judge the new Power Rangers movie for yourself when it opens on Friday (March 24) in US and UK cinemas. Watch a trailer below:
