New Ayrshire MP gave 'tour of constituency' in House of Commons maiden speech
North Ayrshire and Arran’s new MP has made her maiden speech in the House of Commons.
Irene Campbell won the seat for Labour at the general election in July as the party took the four Ayrshire seats for the first time since 2015.
A North Ayrshire native and former Auchenharvie Academy pupil, Ms Campbell took MPs on a “tour of my constituency” during her maiden speech.

All MPs give a maiden speech after they are first elected to the UK Parliament in the Chamber of the House of Commons.
Ms Campbell said she was “delighted” to be representing her home constituency and thanked former North Ayrshire and Arran MP Patricia Gibson and her staff adding that Ms Gibson “cares about the community we serve and I wish her well”.
By tradition, MPs making a maiden speech are called ahead of other MPs who may have indicated their wish to speak in the same debate.
Maiden speeches are uncontroversial, fairly brief and contain remarks about the constituency. Traditionally, a maiden speech is heard without interruption and other members contributing after a maiden speech will praise the new MP’s first words in Parliament.
