The Babington Arms in Derby has announced a deal to serve customers £1.99 pints for the foreseeable future, in order to “treat the loyal customers” and give back after prices have risen too high.

The new deal starts on Wednesday, September 18 and will see all ales available at The Babington Arms drop to £1.99, however on Wednesdays the Babington Arms will also be celebrating Real Ale Wednesday’s where the reductions will be even greater pushing down pints further to £1.79.

This new title of the cheapest pub to get a pint in Derby has been claimed, with other Wetherspoons in the area not partaking in the new ale deal. It couldn’t come at a better time with the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) stating that they have seen a rise of 4.6% in the price of pints from April 2023 to April 2024.

Amber Beedham, Manager of The Babington Arms said: “We currently sell well over a 1,000 pints of ale each week, we have seen a great response from locals. It's a busy time, and we hope that this promotion will treat the loyal customers. We are doing this for you, we always stand up for the customer when it comes to pricing.”

Amber continued: “When the prices go up 6p you hear about it a lot so it's not often you can turn around and say actually it's 64p cheaper than it was yesterday.”

The Babington lane pub is a part of the Wetherspoons chain, however out of the 800 branches across the nation, it appears that around 650 are running the deal with The Babington Arms as the only one taking up the offer in Derby City centre.

The popular city centre pub will be offering discounts on their three standard ales that they have on all the time including Abbot Ales, Doombar and Ruddles Best as well as several local Derby Ales.

Amber also announced that while the ales will see a price drop, the chain will also drop discounts on a range of other drinks as a part of the Autumn deal including bud light and Stowford press at £1.99 and Coors light at £1.99.

This comes as a welcome surprise to Derby locals as well, as the city was crowned multiple times as the UK’s ale capital, before Sheffield stole the top spot.

Derby’s branch of CAMRA lists all the pubs in the city centre which stock ales from a 20 mile radius, including The Babington Arms, and with the pints being priced at £1.99 it seems that if you wanted to try a selection of locally brewed ales then the city centre Wetherspoons will give you the biggest bang for your buck.

Amber said: “We always have quite a lot of local ones, it's funny as we sell Jim's beer from Falstaff cheaper than he does in his pub, he always asks me how but I can't give away the company secrets.”

Derby will especially welcome this deal, as previously it was crowned the ale capital of the UK before it’s Yorkshire neighbour Sheffield stole the cities crown.

The new offer comes as Wetherspoons boss Tim Martin is currently campaigning for a 12.5% VAT cut which he believes will prevent the hospitality industry from failing, stopping pubs bars and restaurants across the country from closing.
